Ramsden Community Cinema

Ramsden Community Cinema launched in September 2022, showing a mixture of brand new films, recent releases and old favourites in Ramsden Memorial Hall. The Cinema is all about welcoming members of the Ramsden community into the Hall for a good-value night out with friends and neighbours, with about eight films a year. The films are chosen by the Cinema Club Committee - new members always welcome.

The next showings are on Friday 11th October and Friday 8th November 2024 - and you can help choose the movies.

The shortlist is:

BALTIMORE: The true story of Rose Dugdale, an English debutante and heiress who abandoned a life of luxury and privilege for one of defiance and militancy. Amid the political unrest of the 1970s, radicalised by her growing sympathy for the IRA’s cause, Rose stages an armed invasion of an Irish country house. The plan was to steal several valuable paintings and barter them for the release of two imprisoned IRA members. However, as the intended burglary spirals into violence, will Rose be prepared to face the dire repercussions of her actions? Watch the trailer at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h8KCSeFjnMo. DRAMA/THRILLER 2023 Cert 15.

THE FALL GUY: Colt Seavers (Ryan Gosling) is a stuntman, and like everyone in the stunt community, he gets blown up, shot, crashed, thrown through windows and dropped from the highest of heights, all for our entertainment. And now, fresh off an almost career-ending accident, this down-on-his-luck hero has to track down a missing movie star, solve a conspiracy and try to win back the love of his life (Emily Blunt) while still doing his day job. RUDY: Living in the rural Warwickshire, Rudy (McCormick) finds her relationship with her father being tested. Stuck as a proxy parent to her younger siblings and dealing with her own loss, she feels increasingly overlooked when her father opens up their home to a paying guest. Through a newfound friendship with a boy from Coventry, she discovers fun, freedom and autonomy, but will the cost be too high? Watch the trailer at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uI_DRoWwRlA . DRAMA 2023 Cert 12A.

SWEDE CAROLINE: A hilarious mockumentary which follows Caroline, a competitive giant vegetable grower, as she readies herself for the big annual National Veg Championship. When her prized marrow, named Ricky Hutton, is stolen, Caroline and her fellow growers, conspiracy theorist Paul (Richard Lumsden) and affable Willy (Celyn Jones), are led into a seedy world of crime as they attempt to find the culprit. VINDICATION SWIM: The inspirational story of Mercedes Gleitze, the first British woman to swim the English Channel, and her battle against both the cold waters of the Channel and the oppressive society of 1920s England. When a rival claims to have performed the same feat and is shown to be lying, Mercedes’s own achievement is called into question, forcing her into a repeat performance, the “vindication swim” of the title. WILDING: Documentary based on Isabella Tree’s 2018 memoir of how she and her husband Charlie Burrell completely overhauled the 1400-acre Knepp estate he had inherited in Sussex. The first thing they were told when they took over the land was that they would never make a go of farming it, as the soil had been impoverished by over-intensive cultivation, so the couple decided to experiment with returning it to the wild. They introduced wild ponies from Dartmoor, let deer wander, and allowed herds of pigs to roam freely (to the disapproval of their neighbours). All their cows and sheep live outdoors all year round with little husbandry. Watch the trailer at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wha__qRugTw . DOCUMENTARY 2023 Cert PG.
