Documentary based on Isabella Tree’s 2018 memoir of how she and her husband Charlie Burrell completely overhauled the 1400-acre Knepp estate he had inherited in Sussex. The first thing they were told when they took over the land was that they would never make a go of farming it, as the soil had been impoverished by over-intensive cultivation, so the couple decided to experiment with returning it to the wild. They introduced wild ponies from Dartmoor, let deer wander, and allowed herds of pigs to roam freely (to the disapproval of their neighbours). All their cows and sheep live outdoors all year round with little husbandry.

Visitors are encouraged to explore all parts of the vineyard and walled gardens when we throw open the gates for the first of our Open Days this year.

From our pop-up cafe you can enjoy the beautiful and peaceful surroundings of the gardens, or bring a picnic to relax in the vineyard and make the most of your day out in this idyllic corner of West Oxfordshire.

The gardens provide the ideal opportunity for children to see a wide range of plants, fruit and veg, spot dragonflies and newts in the pond, and count the chickens roaming the vineyard. 

Take the opportunity to speak to Bridewell staff and volunteers to find out more about the recovery service and how you can support Bridewell’s work.  Come and be inspired by the gardens tucked away in this beautiful valley and find out what goes on beyond the walls. 

Plants and Produce

Bridewell produce will be on sale including our acclaimed organic sparkling wine made from grapes grown in the vineyard.

There are our high-quality plants, the product of much hard work and attention as part of the day to day activities of the recovery service, caring for and maintaining the gardens.

Dogs on leads are very welcome.

The Festival Players Theatre Company returns to Ramsden for the annual production of Shakespeare at Cherry Tree Cottage.

Hosted again in the beautiful surroundings of Cherry Tree Cottage, High Street, tickets cost £25 per head, and school-age children are free. The play is fully sponsored so ALL ticket proceeds raise funds for The Story Museum.

Gates will open for picnics at 17:30 and the play will start at 19:30. There will be interval refreshments and the now standard Shakespeare quiz, so mug up on all things Shakespeare for the chance to win a bottle of fizz and some Story Museum goodies.
